Obama Deserves A Second Term As President!

OMAHA, NE – As the elections of 2012 start to accelerate with the Obama campaign’s attacks on Romney, some people are left wondering, “Does Obama really deserve a second term?”  After revisiting some of Obama’s accomplishments in his first term, that answer may be a resounding, YES!  From his first day in office, Obama has been working the midnight oil to implement an economic recovery program that has created nearly 3 million jobs, he has worked to end the war in Iraq, and he has worked to expand healthcare access to all Americans.  While all his opponents  could do was whine and beat their fists to the floor demanding to see the President’s birth certificate as if this was Dixieland after the Civil War. The President has accomplished much in his first term, and will do considerable more if he is re-elected with a decent Congress to go with him.

First and foremost, the President is committed to American women and their families. Obama supports Equal Pay for Equal Work and displayed this by signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help ensure women get paid the same as men for the same work.  Obama is committed to improving women’s health. Starting in 2012, new health insurance plans will be required to cover women’s preventative services such as mammograms, domestic violence screenings, and contraception without charge. Obama reversed the Global Gag Rule which banned government from providing aid to international family planning groups. Obama stood up to Republicans trying to derail a woman’s right to choose and defund planned parenthood, thus protecting all women’s right to choose.

President Obama is committed to Healthcare reform, and displayed this on March 23, 2010, by signing the Affordable Healthcare Act into law. The law contains many beneficial measures, including ending insurance company abuses by prohibiting insurers from denying coverage to people with preexisting conditions or from cancelling coverage when someone gets sick. The new law will also help keep premiums low by making insurance companies justify rate hikes.  Insurance companies will also have to provide rebates if they don’t spend at least 80% of consumers premiums on care instead of overhead, marketing and profits. The ACA will also expand access to care by allowing 32 million Americans to be able to afford healthcare insurance for the first time.  Under the law, 95% of Americans under 65 will have healthcare insurance.  What is now known as ObamaCare will also close the so-called Medicare Prescription Drug Donut Hole by 2020.  So far, over 2.6 million seniors have saved an average of over $550 on their prescription drugs.

Obama committed from day one to putting Americans back to work and rebuilding economic fairness for the middle class. On job creation, the POTUS supported an economic recovery program that supported as many as 3.6 million jobs by cutting taxes, investing in clean energy, roads and bridges, keeping teachers in classrooms and protecting unemployment benefits. Obama saved the auto industry from collapse by preventing the loss of more than 1.4 million jobs.  The private sector has created nearly 3 million jobs during 21 straight months of private sector growth.  There is still much to do about the economy, which is why the President is fighting for The American Jobs Act which would put even more people back to work now  and put even more money in people’s pockets.

President Obama believes in an America with an economy built to last, meaning Americans should have the opportunity to earn enough to raise a family, send their kids through school, own a home and have enough to put away for retirement.  To do this, our great nation must out educate the rest of the world by making college accessible to hundreds of thousands more students by ending billions of dollars in subsidies to banks and using savings to double funding for Pell grants. We must out innovate the rest of the world by making substantial investments in clean energy manufacturing to create the jobs of the future here in America  and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. The POTUS believes everyone should play by the same rules and demonstrated this when he signed into law Wall Street reform to protect American families from unfair lending practices, rein in Wall Street excesses and prevent future financial crises.  Obama believes everyone should do their fair share, and he has called  for the closing of tax loopholes to ensure millionaires and billionaires don’t pay less in taxes than the middle class.

Barack Obama, who has supported LGBT issues from the beginning, has helped pass LGBT inclusive hate crimes legislation, repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and now openly supports Marriage Equality. Obama has also helped pass other legislation that will benefit the LGBT Community.  Obama has done what he could for the LGBT Community in first term, its time we help him get a well deserved second term.

President Obama kept his word on Iraq by bringing the war to a responsible end and brought our troops home. Obama believes in honoring the service of our troops by ensuring our troops and their families get the help earned and enacting new tax credits to encourage businesses to hire unemployed and disabled veterans.

As Our Stomachs Churn, The Bigotry Continues.

OMAHA, NE – Ever hear the phrase, “Bigotry is as old as the Bible”?  Well, get used to it, its true.  There is a reason for it and it will only get more prominent as the LGBT community fights for and wins more civil rights protections.  Just like the extremist Tea Party fearing whites becoming the minority in this nation, the religious bigots of our day have turned bigotry into a profession and a perverted art form all because they fear the gays are coming to take over!!!  At least for every bigoted church in existence there are churches who are still very accepting of the LGBT community. Let’s not forget them!

In Nebraska, all the Jon Bruning’s and the Jean Stothert’s get scores of campaign money and broad rightwing support everytime they say something against LGBT equality. Dozens of divorced conservatives condemn homosexual love and marriage, but behind closed doors they engage in sexual positions forbidden by their own Bible with spouse number 2, 3, or more. This is the hypocrisy conservatives love.  Speaking of conservative loves, here’s a record from Sarpy County of straight married couples supporting the sanctity of marriage.  The hypocrisy of American conservatism energizes them to let loose on the private lives of those who struggle in society, as that is the only way conservatives can raise themselves up above their very own sins and the sins of their parents. Jean Stothert says in a recent article, “The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution already gives everyone equal protection under the law.”  So what on Earth would Omaha and Lincoln have any business passing an ordinance that supports the 14th Amendment right? It should also be noted that those same Stothert quotes have been mysteriously scrubbed from every article they appeared in.  Bigoted types in Omaha already receive protections not granted to them by the Constitution, heaven forbid anyone else gets the same privilege. Religion is a choice, and the constitution protects that.

Anti-LGBT hate groups in Lincoln claim to have gathered enough signatures to force Lincoln’s LGBT ordinance to a vote of the people.  One things none of the hate groups can explain is why the majority gets to dictate the civil rights of a minority.  Nor can they explain why their religious beliefs should be held above all others.  Nor they can they show the public where in the Constitution it says homosexuality is a sin.  If they want us to base our rules on God’s law, try bringing evidence that shows God exists. Even people who once supported reparative therapy are retracting their statements.

There is light at the end of the tunnel.  Obama’s final nod for Marriage Equality has caused some positive ripples in the socio-political “pond” of our nation. Will Smith and NAACP are a few of the ships who have felt the waves, and they have tilted their sails in the direction of Civil Rights for All! This is why it is so important for our leaders to come out and be brave and support Marriage Equality or come out of the closet, whatever the case maybe. If they don’t it is our job as citizens and voters to give them that needed push and support they deserve!!!

Go Solar! Attend a Solar Garden Workshop!

OMAHA, NE – Solar Gardens are an innovative way to provide homegrown renewable energy to Nebraska communities.  To further discuss the importance of solar energy and to help educate the community on Solar Gardens, a Nebraska Solar Co-op Workshop will be held on Saturday, May12th from 1pm to 2:30pm at First Unitarian Church, address 3114 Harney St in Omaha.

Brice Miller, a student at UNO,  has developed a business model for solar gardens, an innovative way to provide homegrown, renewable energy to Nebraska communities and benefit local economies.  After the presentation, James Devaney and Michael Shonka, President and Vice-President of Nebraska Solar Energy Society, will be available to answer questions about Miller’s business model and other solar co-op models at this workshop.

And just what are Solar Gardens? According to the Solar Garden Institute, “a solar garden is a neighborhood solar array with grid-connected subscribers. Homes and businesses, even if shaded by trees, receive a bill credit as if the panels were on their own roof”.

The Green Omaha Coalition has some great information on starting your own Solar Energy Co-op.  What many people don’t realize is that Nebraska has great potential for Solar Power, in a 2006 survey, Nebraska was ranked #13 in its potential for Solar Power.

We Must Stop the Keystone Pipeline!

OMAHA, NE – The Keystone Pipeline has become one of the biggest environment controversies in the past couple of years.  The misbehaving corporation of TransCanada has been trying to push the Keystone Pipeline down Nebraskans’ throats, and at the same time putting senators from the Unicameral in its pocket.  Not only that, but TransCanada has been lying about the jobs it would create and it making taxpayers pay for research and its future use on the land.  What a shame.  The Natural Resources Defense Council website reports,

According to the U.S. State Department the pipeline would create at most 6,500 temporary construction jobs, and would leave only “hundreds” of permanent jobs, according to TransCanada, the Canadian company that wants to build the pipeline. Claims that the pipeline would employ tens or even hundreds of thousands of people are simply not true. A Cornell University study concludes the pipeline would kill more jobs than it would create, by reducing investment in the clean energy economy.”

The State Department’s claim of 6,500 temp jobs is a far cry from an oil industry  TV commercial’s claim of 1 million jobs.  Not only would the TransCanada Keystone Pipeline kill clean energy jobs, it is a serious and unique danger to the environment. The Natural Resources Defense Council website goes on to say,

Tar sands crude oil pipeline companies may be putting America’s public safety at risk. Increasingly, pipelines transporting tar sands crude oil into the United States are carrying diluted bitumen or “DilBit” — a highly corrosive, acidic, and potentially unstable blend of thick raw bitumen and volatile natural gas liquid condensate — raising risks of spills and damage to communities along their paths. The impacts of tar sands production are well known. Tar sands extraction in Canada destroys Boreal forests and wetlands, causes high levels of greenhouse gas pollution, and leaves behind immense lakes of toxic waste. Less well understood, however, is the increased risk and potential harm that can be caused by transporting the raw form of tar sands oil (bitumen) through pipelines to refineries in the United States.”

Bold Nebraska, a non-partisan and progressive organization, has been on the case concerning TransCanada says they are unfit to build the pipeline. In a press release by Jane Kleeb, she says, “TransCanada has resorted to lies,  bully tactics, and coercion while changing key information depending on the audience.”

Its time for the Nebraska Unicameral to work for Nebraskans and not dirty oil companies.  On Thursday, March 29th at 9am, the Unicameral will begin debate on LB 1161. The bill will provide a loophole solely for TransCanada and fast tracks their pipeline approval. Make sure you check out this link for more information from Bold Nebraska on the TransCanada pipeline.

It is ObamaCare, because Obama cares!

OMAHA, NE – Early in the Healthcare debate, healthcare opponents referred to HealthCare reform as Obamacare to derogatorize it. I prefer to call it Obamacare because Obama cares. It says something when a certain group of people are so afraid of healthcare reform they named it after the face of their fear, a black man.

Despite the false comments about Obamacare, millions of American are currently enjoying its true benefits.  Americans up to the age of 26 can remain on their parents health insurance, a powerful provision that protects millions of young Americans, while putting millions of dollars in the the coffers of HealthCare Reform, helping to bring down the cost of health insurance.

A breast cancer survivor asks her state attorney general to drop lawsuit against Obamacare. Without Obamacare, she could be rejected by insurance companies for preexisting conditions. Another benefit for women is the provision in the Affordable Healthcare Act help insure women will be able to get access to treatment for other health issues.

In a recent speech at the first-ever White House LGBT Health Conference, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius noted, “The Affordable Care Act may represent the strongest foundation we have ever created to begin closing LGBT health disparities.”  Obama’s HealthCare Reform is his signature accomplishment for his first term, and while Obamacare is not the final word on healthcare reform it does provide the LGBT Community some great benefits, including coverage of preventative care, date collection on LGBT health, and Patients’ Bill of Right’s.

And despite the GOP’s rhetoric about HealthCare Reform killing business, there is much reason to show its helping businesses now including companies that perform diagnostic tests.  Although many companies in the Health Insurance industry oppose the law, many are looking to it as a source of new business.  You would think businesses would benefit from it at a labor standpoint, after all a healthy American is a hard working American.  The benefits to Obamacare are numerous, there is no excuse to get rid of it.
