Democrats Demand Election Chief Phipps’ Removal.

OMAHA, NE – Douglas County Democrats are demanding the removal of Election Commissioner Phipps removal after irregularities during the primary and general election votes in 2012. Phipps has also been accused of unfairly closing polls in Douglas County, ending in the disenfranchisement of voters in the poorer and more diverse areas of Omaha.  A bill passed by Nebraska Unicameral, LB449, allowed for a significant increase in voters per precinct.  Dave Phipps claimed he was subject to the changes allowed by the bill, so he closed a large number of polls in Douglas County.  It was later admitted, by Phipps himself, that he was responsible for much of the content of the bill to begin with.

The Douglas County Democrats sent out an email with the following information:

The [Constitution] gives us the right to petition our government and demand justice when we see injustice abound.  What has happened in 2012 has been inexcusable and deliberate.  It has been a systematic destruction of our citizens ability to cast their vote and make their voices heard.  We must create a strong front to demand that Governor Dave Heineman removes current Election Commissioner Dave Phipps from office.  Our goal is to collect signatures of citizens of Douglas County and present those to not only to Gov. Heineman, but also to the entire Nebraska Legislators that represent Douglas County.

You may ask why should Dave Phipps be removed.  The following evidence shows Mr. Phipps, through his intentional gross negligence, incompetence and intentional dishonesty, took deliberate acts to suppress and deny voters of any and all political persuasion the most sacred right we have; the right to vote:

  • Closing nearly 1/2 of all Polling Places in Douglas County with just weeks prior to the Primary Election
  • Sending some voters 3 or 4 different voter registration cards during 2012
  • Deliberately sending the incorrect voter registration cards to voters when he could have stopped them from printing in the first place
  • Lied to voters when he stated that his sole purpose for the closings was to save taxpayer dollars…he went over budget..no savings
  • Stated that he was forced to comply with the new law (LB 449)…only after the election he boasted that he “wrote 95% of the bill”
During the Primary and General Elections:
  • Voters were asked for Photo ID in order to vote when none was required
  • Voters were required to show their voter identification number in order to vote
  • Voters were denied the right to vote provisionally
  • Polling places had the incorrect ballots for voters to use
  • Due to vast confusion, when a voter arrived at the wrong polling place, they were not told the correct place to vote
  • Poll workers could not reach the Election Commissioner’s office to solve problems, so voters were told to come back later
  • Not enough provisional ballots at polling places
  • Voters received pre-filled ballots
Please, click on the online petition icon and place your name as a person that wants the return of honest elections prior to the upcoming city elections.  Also, please click on the paper petition form and get your family, friends, co-workers…even strangers to sign the petition. We must bring back fair elections and if Dave Phipps remains our Election Commissioner, that is in serious jeopardy.
And Republicans like Scott Lautenbaugh claim Democrats have no right to complain.

HRC’s New Municipal Equality Index.

OMAHA, NE – The largest LGBT civil rights group in the US has done it again.  The Human Rights Campaign, HRC, known for the Corporate Equality Index, has now developed a Municipal Equality Index to measure how LGBT-friendly our cities are.

HRC’s Municipal Equality Index has rated 137 cities across the nation. The Index includes the 50 state capitals, the 50 most populous cities in the country, and the 25 large, 25 mid-size, and 25 small municipalities with the highest proportion of same-sex couples.  The MEI rates cities based on various criteria spanning six categories, including: Non-discrimination laws, relationship recognition, the city’s employment practices, inclusiveness of city services, law enforcement, and municipal leadership.

Nebraska’s Progressive Oasis of Omaha is listed in the index as well as Lincoln.  You can find them in the PDF here.  Lincoln is on page #157 and Omaha is on page #159.  The Omaha index has some oddities, for example, the city has bonus points for supposedly having  openly LGBT city leadership elected or appointed with a +3.  Omaha’s overall score is a 59, still very low.  Omaha has no openly LGBT leadership, although one of its suburbs does.  The Index does not specifiy that its statistics include the Metro area. On top of some of the issues I already have with HRC, (I think they are elitist) I do remember controversy arose over their Corporate Equality Index when Target and Best Buy, both companies scored 100% on the CEI, were found to be supporting anti-LGBT groups with political funds.   Let’s see if this MEI develops some integrity.

One Corporation Behaving Fabulously?

OMAHA, NE – While retail and other companies have been receiving bad publicity for paying their workers too little while the executives get huge raises and bonuses, one retail giant has been paying their workers well and still achieving their bottom line.

The American economy needs a strong, thriving middle class in order to thrive.  I think it is long overdue that the conversation switch from being concerned about shareholder and CEO’s but to those are working for wages.  It is the buying power of the worker, the consumer, the middle class that is the power behind the American economy.  This always has been and always will be the truth.  Unfortunately, because of the Cold War and the Reagan Era, any talk about unions or public ownership or even fair wages is relegated to traitor or commie bastard talk. Its time to change that conversation, because the American worker is suffering.  All these years, under the concept of low wages and low prices Wal-Mart rose to the top.  But underneath the canopy is another model, one that works better for the American worker, and thus more people. The model championed by Costco, the anti Wal-Mart.

Costco has developed a great model that helps perpetuate the fact that you don’t have to pay your workers minimum wage to support your bottom line.  Why should a large company have to go bankrupt just to pay its executives outlandish salaries and bonuses? Costco pays its workers an average of $17, 42% over its closest rival, Sam’s Club.  The result is lower turnover for Costco’s employees as well as achieving a higher production rate, too.  Why should a retailer pays its workers at poverty level so its shareholders can live it up? Costco has resisted the urgency from Wall Street thinking to lower wages and raise prices.  In fact, Costco’s shares have been increasing, while Wal-Mart’s shares have been slipping.  Wal-Mart’s recent bad publicity hasn’t been helping its image nor its stock prices.

A comparison of Costco and Wal-Mart.

The Best Is Yet To Come, America!!!

OMAHA, NE – President Barack Obama’s re-election is every much the win for Obama as it is for the Obama Coalition!  As we wait for the results to be certified with the Electoral College vote, Progressives around the US anxiously await what a 2nd term Obama administration will bring.

One of the most talked about issues after the election is the so-called Fiscal Cliff.  Obama and top Congressional leaders could produce legislation that takes a serious chunk out of the growing $16 trillion pile of US debt and put it on a true downward trajectory. According to the Huffington Post, Obama and lame-duck Congressional leaders could be just weeks away from a deal to avert the dreaded “Fiscal Cliff”.  On the other hand, the loss of pragmatic and centrist members of Congress from both sides of the aisle could make cutting deals even harder.   A growing number liberals are not worried seeing the Defense budget get slashed or taxes go up on all Americans if their priorities are not met.  A record number of seats held by women is comforting to others who see them is harbingers of civility and deal making.  Keep you crossed, closely tied to the Fiscal Cliff fiasco are the economy and job creation, the two biggest priorities.

Among the LGBT Community, adopting ENDA and repealing DOMA are major issues.  Passage of the these bills is a priority and even overpaid organizations like HRC were convinced this would be taken care of in Obama’s first term.  I’d like to see some of these LGBT equality organizations just get it done instead of turning it into a constant dangling carrot for pink and lavender dollars..  While there are several cases in the courts dealing with DOMA, repealing the bigoted law is also still a priority. The GOP still controls the House and it is still not known if enough GOP House members would switch their support to pass a repeal of DOMA.

Ending the War in Afghanistan and keeping the US out of more wars is another priority. Obama affirmed his plans to end the war after his re-election in a speech in Chicago.  The war has endured for 11 years, making it the longest war in US history. Even John McCain is wondering if the war is still worth fighting. With trouble in the Middle East and tension with Iran rising,  it is possible US troops will be sent elsewhere.

Maybe the best that is yet to come  is seeing Barack Obama’s political tap dancing.

Bob Kerrey Gets Last Minute Endorsements!

OMAHA, NE – Bob Kerrey received some final election week endorsements, much to the chagrin of an already shaken Nebraska Republican Party. Most notable of them came from a prominent Republican in Nebraska politics past, Chuck Hagel.  Hagel said Bob Kerrey would put country ahead of party.  Hagel’s endorsement of Kerrey set off harsh reactions from leading GOP elected officials, including Nebraska Senator Mike Johanns. Hagel said his distaste for partisanship is behind his endorsement of Bob Kerrey.

Another notable endorsement Kerrey received was from actress Sally Field, who urged Nebraskans to vote for Bob Kerrey, not just because he is the most qualified, but since she lives in California, she can’t vote for her friend, but we can as Nebraska voters.

In another endorsement video, Cinema’s David Koechner finds a humorous way to tell Nebraska voters to support Bob Kerrey as well.  While not from the state, Koechner has in-laws in Nebraska. He also brings up the Fischer’s unfair and now infamous land grab lawsuit against their neighbors.

Two Senate leaders and conservative Democrats, Senator Joe Manchin and Senator Mark Warner endorse Bob Kerrey.  Kerrey said, “both men are known as bi-partisan leaders in the Senate and I intend to join them in working across party lines to balance the budget when I’m elected.”  Congrats to the Bob Kerrey campaign for all the endorsements.  Can’t wait to see the elections results!
