OMAHA, NE – Nebraska’s own homegrown group, Bold Nebraska, continues to fight for what is right when it comes to TransCanada and its nasty Keystone politics. I idolize the efforts of Bold Nebraska and its Founder, Jane Kleeb, for holding up the construction of Keystone, and for putting the truth out there for all Americans to see.  It is a shame not all Democrats fall in line when it comes to standing against TransCanada and the threat the Keystone Pipeline poses on the Oglala Aquifer, the Sandhills and especially the well-being of Nebraska property owners the pipeline would be built on.  Since it began in 2010,  Bold Nebraska is setting out to change the political landscape and restore political balance.

Without the efforts of Jane Kleeb and Bold Nebraska, the Keystone Pipeline would have been a done deal already, a point confirmed in a nice little Rolling Stone article about today’s new green heroes.  She has successfully squared off with with oil companies and labor groups that have spent millions of dollars in DC pushing the project. Much of the opposition to the Keystone XL Pipeline has been centered in Nebraska, thanks to the efforts of Kleeb and Bold Nebraska.

And today that fight continues, and Bold Nebraska doesn’t fight alone.  Groups like 350.org, the Sierra Club and vocal Congressmen, like Keith Ellison.  Keith Ellison recently released this press release about the Keystone Xl Pipeline and Terry Lee’s Northern Route Approval Act. Ellison says, the Keystone Pipeline “would cause the same carbon dioxide emissions as over 37 million passenger cars.”   A group of Congressmen signed a letter to the President telling him the costs of the Keystone XL Pipeline for outweigh the benefits.  See the letter here.

Why would a Congressman like Terry Lee propose a such a law that caters to big oil?  According to the PriceofOil.org, House Supporters of Keystone XL Took $56 Million From Big Oil.  From the article:  “Members of Congress supporting the pipeline took in a combined $56 million from fossil fuel interests, $36 million from oil industry interests alone. Members supporting the pipeline took an average of $233,774 from all fossil fuel interests, $150,604 from oil industry interests alone. Members opposing the pipeline took an average of $65,233 from all fossil fuel interests, and $24,886 from oil industry alone. Supporters took 6 times more from the oil industry than opponents.”  Make sure you read the entire article here.  Lee Terry’s bill would give TransCanada’s Keystone XL Pipeline a special exemption from US environmental law.  From the article: “Terry’s bill would exempt the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline from the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Clean Water Act (CWA), the Endangered Species Act (ESA), permitting requirements for federal rights of way, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. H.R. 3 isn’t a bill to approve Keystone XL. It’s a bill for giving a foreign company special treatment by exempting it from the nation’s most cherished laws protecting public health, welfare and the environment.”

It is pretty sad when your Congressman will support special treatment for a foreign corporation, but does little else for Americans with their time in DC. It is really sad when a progressive leader like Jane Kleeb has done more for the state than Nebraska’s entire GOP delegation combined in DC.

Don’t forget to sign this petition to investigate the State Department’s Environmental Report here.

Below, Jane Kleeb speaks her mind at the State Department Hearing on the Keystone XL Pipeline in Grand Island.

Jean Stothert: Saying Anything to be Mayor!!!

OMAHA, NE – As the Omaha Mayor‘s race gets closer and closer, Jean Stothert’s rhetoric becomes a political campaign free for all.  You can see it in article after article, debate after debate concerning Omaha’s Mayoral Race.

One point to pick at in Stothert’s campaign is her rhetoric about the budget. She wants to cut taxes and the budget, but then fails to admit what she’ll cut.   A typical tactic seen nationally from Tea Partiers.  She had said during the primary that she wouldn’t immediately repeal the restaurant tax nor the increases in the wheel tax. A recent article in the Omaha Word-Herald called Stothert’s budget ideas, “Magic Math”.

The Suttle campaign recently released an ad knocking Stothert’s magic math, hidden secrets and broken campaign promises.

The ad above points out Stothert stance on privatization of the City Fire Services, you can see the interview in the video below where Stothert said she would support the Fire Fighters, but in actual votes on the City Council, she voted against EVERY campaign promise she made to them.

A YouTube video under the account of John Public pokes fun at Jean Stothert’s issues with her budget math.  You can enjoy the video here. Its called Jean’s Magic Budget Ride

One thing people may not realize about Jean Stothert is that she is a Tea Partier and has spoken at several Tea Party rallies in the past few years. Here is Jean Stothert speaking at such a rally in 2010.

Contrast that video, with a video taking from her speaking at a Tea Party rally in April 2013.  Looks like she doesn’t want some people to know she is a big  local Tea Party Queen.

Let’s not forget how rude and vindictive Jean Stothert can be.  I mentioned in my previous article how she falsely and publicly accused me of creating some parody twitter account. Here is another example of her vindictive and threatening nature, basically threatening people with their jobs or doing future business with the city.

That's the kind of Mayor she'll be!!!

That’s the kind of Mayor she’ll be!!!

As you can see, Jean Stothert will be a horrible Mayor for Omaha!  Help your friends see through all the crap she’ll say just to be Mayor!! Please check out my Jean Stothert for Retirement Facebook page for more info on how horrible she truly will be.  Don’t forget to like and share the page, as well as this article!  Thanks!

OMAHA, NE – Jean Stothert is at it again, telling her lies and spreading her petty and misleading politics.  Where should I start?  LOL I think I know where!   Jean Stothert’s sweet heart $10,000 donation from a landowner and the truth about her Fire Contract!

Jean Stothert’s corrupt “little” $10,000 donation from Virgil Anderson, Owner of the now infamous development project near 16th and Locust street. When questioned by the OWH, Stothert said, “she wanted to give Anderson and the city more time to negotiate a fair selling price for the property”.  The article goes to mention that, “The city had offered Anderson about $1.1 million for the site. Anderson’s response was to ask nearly three times that amount, officials said”.  I think he just needed more time to negotiate a higher price tag to charge Omaha taxpayers.  Anderson donated the $10,000 just days after the Development Project appeared on the city council agenda. Soon after, Jean Stothert lead a coalition that blocked the development’s passage until this corruption came to light. The coalition fell apart.  Then and only then did the measure pass with a miraculous 7-0 vote of approval from the Omaha City Council.

$10,000 in Petty Politics

Greedy Property owner’s Sweet heart donation to the very corrupt Jean Stothert.

You can see the full document here.

Now let’s talk about Jean Stothert’s much publicized disaster, also known as her Fire Contract.  There is a previous Progressive Oasis article that features a video of Stothert being interviewed for Fire Union support for a previous election campaign.  You’ll see she supports many things the Fire Union wants when she’s not grandstanding against unions altogether. The video can also be seen here.  From the video page:

The Facts about the Fire Union Deal Jean Stothert negotiated
and promoted in her campaign for Omaha Mayor:

  • Allows current Firefighters to retire at 45

  • Allows fire management “spiking” until 2023

  • Provided highest Firefighter pay in Omaha history

  • Guarantees minimum bureau staffing, a point eliminated by the CIR

  • Largest Fire Department Budget ever

  • Left a $7 Million deficit in the Omaha City Budget

Spike it!

Spiking Still Allowed

There has also been some controversy about Jean Stothert receiving campaign donations from Fire Unions.  She once made a statement that anyone receiving donations from unions should NOT be able to vote on union issues in the City Council.  Low and behold, she herself accepted union donations, even after she denied it.  Here is the proof:

Jean Stothert took Union dollars

Jean Stothert lied about receiving Union money.

Here is the link to the Taxpayers Unlimited website showing its a Fire Union.  A link to an OWH article detailing Stothert recently donating the Union money to a local charity can be found right here. The pic below is more documentation of Jean Stothert’s lies from a mailer.

Jean Stothert's Fibs are now Famous!

Jean Stothert’s Fibs are now Famous!

This is a snapshot of a text copy of Jean Stothert falsely accusing me of creating the @meanjeanomaha twitter account. Circa Jan 2011, sometime after the first attempt to pass LGBT protections in Omaha’s City Council. Jean posted false accusation about 11pm at night back in about Jan 2010 and by the time I got up and checked it around 7am in the morning, the entire thread was gone. I sent her a nasty message about it and was banned from her page soon after.

Jean Stothert's Lies.

Jean Stothert falsely and publicly accuses Ken Riter of @meanjeanomaha twitter account.

You can find more information about Jean Stothert at the Jean Stothert for Retirement FaceBook page.  As you can see and I’m sure you already knew, Jean Stothert is not a person of integrity.  That’s the kind of Mayor she’ll be!!!

OMAHA, NE – Three very important progressive bills have hearings with the Unicameral’s Judiciary committee Thursday. March 14th, 2013. The bills are LB380, LB385 and LB485. Here the members of the Judiciary Committee and their contact info.

Brad Ashford, Chair – bashford@leg.ne.gov  phone: 402-471-2622
Steve Lathrop – slathrop@leg.ne.gov   phone: 402-471-2623
Ernie Chambers – phone 402-471-2612 Chambers elected to NOT have email this session.
Mark Christensen – mchristensen@leg.ne.gov phone: 402-471-2805
Coby coash – ccoash@leg.ne.gov  phone: 402-471-2632
Al Davis – adavis@leg.ne.gov  phone: 402-471-2628
Amanda McGill – amcgill@leg.ne.gov   phone: 402-471-2610
Les Seiler – lseiler@leg.ne.gov  phone: 402-471-2712

LB380 – by Sara Howard (Email: showard@leg.ne.gov Phone: 402-471-2723) will allow qualified unmarried couples to adopt. The bill will also allow second parent adoptions.  Contrary to some discussions online, this bill does not mention sexual orientation and gender identity, so don’t even use it as a talking point.  It is strictly an adoption bill allowing unmarried couples and second parents to adopt.  Nebraska has no statute covering these issues and courts have rejected adoptions challenged in court because of the lack of statute. Forward Equality has a sample email and letter you can use to send to members of the Judiciary committee to urge them to pass this bill.  Mika Covington of Forward Equality has done a stand up job of research and petitioning for this bill.

LB385 – by Jeremy Nordquist (Email: jnordquist@leg.ne.gov Phone: 402-471-2721) will prohibit discrimination based on a list of classes when it comes to child placement.  The bill does include sexual orientation and gender identity as well as race, color, religion, sex, disability, marital status, or national origin. Here is a sample email you can send to your state senator and members of the Judiciary committee.  Please be sure to include any personal stories of your own, as these will also help our state senators make the right decisions.

The Unicameral needs to pass LB385 to help children in Nebraska find proper homes with qualified people of various classes.  In the pass few years, Nebraska has had several problems with its foster care and healthcare system for children and passing LB385 will help get these kids out of an insolvent system and into fulfilling and loving families.

LB485 – by Daniele Conrad (Email: dconrad@leg.ne.gov Phone: 402-471-2720) will prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.  it does NOT include gender identity.  Please urge your state senator and the Judiciary Committee to only pass this bill with gender identity included.  Transgendered people shouldn’t be considered a separate step in the civil rights movement when we are ONE COMMUNITY!  Some people, including LGB people seem to forget that the T means something when we say LGBT and our politicians and elected representatives should be fully aware of this, too! Conrad introduced this bill, and it is customary for the introducer to amend the bill.  If you want this bill amended to include gender identity, you must contact her office, by email,  phone, mail. However you do it, but please urge her to include gender identity. Here is a sample email you can send to her office. You can also send a similar version to members of the Judiciary committee.

Thank you for introducing LB485. As a member/supporter of the LGBT community I appreciate that you understand it is time to have a discussion concerning LGBT issues in the Nebraska Unicameral.  The LGBT community is diverse; we are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. We have people of all races, color, ethnicities and religions. We are ONE community.    Gender identity is not an extra step when it comes to civil rights, our LGBT community is on the same step as we climb up the social ladder for equality, please don’t leave gender identity behind. That is why I urge you to include gender identity in your bill LB485.

Please do what you can, whether it is sending an email, making a phone call, or even showing up for the hearing on Thursday, March 14th, 2013. I will provide updates in this article, this week.
