Occupy Omaha Demonstrates Peacefully!

On the morning of October 15th, Omaha officially joined the Occupy Wall Street movement with a sweeping motion of peaceful demonstrations around Omaha downtown area.  With 1000 attending, Occupy Omaha quickly shown its clout, easily dwarfing the politically waning and nationally unpopular Tea Party, whose  protesters numbered maybe 10.  Occupy Omaha demonstrators gathered at the City Hall building at 9am.  Various types of people showed up; liberals, conservatives, libertarians, former Tea Partiers, racial minorities and queers; even candidates for office, like Sara Howard for the Unicameral-9 and Gwen Howard for NE Congressional District-2.  The mother-daughter team were shown holding signs displaying their support. The demonstrators soon made their way to the Federal Building, gaining more people allow the way, forget the whopping 10 Tea Partiers who showed up to counter protest.  From the Federal building, they made their way down Farnam to the Old Market, where they marched in a loop from Farnam to 10th to Jackson to 13th and finally the Gene Leahy Mall.  Please visit the Occupy Omaha website for pictures and video available for Saturday’s demonstration.

Occupy Omaha protesters outside the Federal Reserve, Stop Corporate Greed!

The entire event went on without any type of incident, unlike other cities where violence, arrests, and outrageous police brutality have occurred.  I think that shines an interesting light on Omaha.

One member, Hollie McClay, had this to say on the Occupy Omaha FaceBook page: “Big shout out to the Omaha Police Department. They were prepared for conflict, but they sure didn’t start any conflict. Big shout out to our Occupy Omaha people! We demonstrated peacefully, picked up a whole lot of trash off our city streets, acted as good citizens and our police force even told some of us it was a pleasure to work with us today. No need to create conflict in a world where the 1% thrives on self-created conflict. A people, United, will Never be Defeated. Good show Omaha! Proud to call you my community!”

Queers in the 99%

Hopefully, other planned demonstrations will go just as well. There is a gathering at Memorial Park Oct 16 at 3pm, and for the following Occupy Omaha protesters will be at Turner Park in Midtown crossing demonstrating during park hours from 7am to 11pm at night.  Hope to see you there!!!

Next week in Omaha we will get to see some progressive democracy in action, and it is exciting.  On October 11th, National Coming Out Day to the LGBT Community, and on October 15th Occupy Omaha joins the national protests started by Occupy Wall Street.

The first event on October 11th is the LGBTQI rally, pushing for civil rights protections for Omaha as well as Employee +1 Benefits for all, both important issues to the modern Queer Community. Details about the event can be found at the Facebook event page. The event was organized by Forward Equality, so make sure you like their page to stay updated! And be at the event on the Memorial Bridge by UNO on Dodge at 12noon on Tuesday October 11th and be a participant in our democracy.

The second big event is Occupy Omaha meeting at 9am Saturday morning of Oct 15th outside City Hall. The group will march from there to the Federal Reserve Building. Be sure to keep updated on future news by liking the Occupy Omaha FaceBook page.  The demonstration is a direct offshoot of the original Occupy Wall Street protests currently going on and taking the nation by storm. Make sure you visit the Occupy Wall Streetwebsite to keep up on the latest police and human rights abuses.  And check out the Declaration of the Occupation of NYC for some wonderful information on why they are protesting. Lets hope the media stops expecting the Occupiers to do the media’s job.  Take care, thanks for reading and here’s my favorite line from the declaration page.

They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one’s skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation. ~ An excerpt from the NYC General Assembly at Occupy Wall Street, Sept 29, 2011.

Elizabeth Warren, Progressive Heroine Extraordinaire

Elizabeth Warren is probably one of the smartest women running for political office that we will see for a long, long time. She was originally charged to head the new Consumer Financial Protections Bureau, but due to great Republican opposition, President Obama decided not to appoint her as head, but she did work in an advisory role to help make sure it was set up properly.

After a disappointing time in DC, Warren returned back home to Massachusetts and announcement her run for the US Senate, as a Democrat. Within one week she was already slightly ahead of Brown in the polls.  During her new campaign she has already made a name for herself as a tough progressive, stating in one speech, that in this country, “No one got rich on his own!”

And below is the transcript for one of the best progressive perspectives out there!

“You built a factory out there? Good for you, But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.  Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”

We need more progressives like her in office, and we need current progressives in office to start growing a pair. The middle class has been trounced on for decades, it is time we start taking the necessary steps to rebuild that middle class.

Jean Stothert and Dave Nabity EXPOSED!

I have to laugh at the title.  It almost sounds like we are catching these two cranky conservatives screwing in a closet somewhere. LOL  For the record, we did not catch these two screwing anywhere.  Fortunately, the truth and the video is much more interesting.  A few years ago, before they were against the fire union, they were totally for it. Of course, they were looking for political campaign support, but who’s counting?

Jean Stothert’s husband worked for the Fire Department, then all of a sudden he didn’t work for them.  With all the complaining Jean Stothert does about campaign money and Unions, she could recuse herself from some proceedings instead of doing her now routine vindictive works.  Here is the youtube video called JEAN STOTHERT EXPOSED , despite the fact she calls it a smear campaign in the media, you can hear and see her say every word.  She says she supports four to a truck for safety reasons and she’s against privatization, yet in reality she supported legislation that would make it easier for Omaha to go to private companies with its Emergency Services.  She specifically states that she “would not stop and say send this to the CIR, I would work until there is an agreement.”  Oops, what happened there?  Then states that she is a person of her word.  I could name dozens of people who would say different.  And I’d agree.  She is horribly political and will do or say anything for votes. I think this video proves it.        JEAN STOTHERT EXPOSED

Mean Jean Stothert represents bigotry in Omaha

Mean Jean Stothert, Omaha's Face of Bigotry

And then there is Omaha Businessman and Cranky Conservative Extraordinaire, David Nabity, who has also prostituted himself out for some gubernatorial political campaign support in 2006. These two sneaky politicians sound like they ripped out a page right out of Jon Bruning’s Raccoon playbook.  Here’s a look at DAVID NABITY EXPOSED

When David Nabity has a fire at his house, you can bet he wants four firefighters on the truck that gets called to his house!!!
