Local Conservatives Run Ignorant Campaigns, Part Three.

OMAHA, NE – Remember when people were saying “There’s something FISHY about that Deb Fischer?”  Well, now we know why!  Deb Fischer and her husband used the courts for an attempted land grab of a neighbors property. Is this what Nebraskans really want to send to DC?  Is this what the Nebraska Way is all about?  To just take away the hard earned money of your neighbors?  The Fischers cost their elderly neighbors $40,00 in court fees.It seems more and more to me that those who claim the government is in everyone’s business, only say that because they want the government out of the way in their pursuit of something. In this case, it seems Deb Fischer pursued a seat in the Unicameral to ensure she could get ahead of Nebraska’s land laws. This website, The Great Fischer Land Grab, has excellent details on how the Fischers attempted to grab land from their elderly neighbors.

Then there is Lee Terry, still tripping over his own lies about Ewing and exaggerations about his own do-nothing career. Lee Terry accepted blame for accepting incorrect information for at least one of his ads.  Lee Terry had sponsored a bill, Hill-Terry, that Terry claimed advanced American energy independence. Oops, it turns out it was eclipsed by the real legislative work of other Congressmen.  LOL  So, not only does Lee Terry not do anything in Congress, he doesn’t fact check his own accomplishments, either.  That explains much, including the $10 Trillion in debt he helped contribute to.

Local Churches Major Part of Anti-LGBT Petition Drive.

OMAHA, NE – Local churches are a major part of the current anti-LGBT petition drive, in most cases they are THE location where the petition will be signed. There is a huge coalition of churches involved going by a variety of names, as vast and varied as their own hatred for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered people, pushing their hatred upon their church goers.

According to the Omaha World Herald, Christ Community Church, Omaha Catholic Parishes, Omaha Trinity Hope Foursquare Church, Westside Church, Lifegate Church, King of Kings Lutheran Church, and Salem Baptist Church are among the churches actively participating.  The reality is, even more churches are involved and most of them belong to the Nebraska Heritage Coalition, which help create the bigoted Omaha Liberty Project.

One of the guys that is in charge of the Omaha Liberty Project is from Nigeria, Femi Awodele.  I think its unusual that these Tea Party types would except a foreigner in their ranks. I guess when you’re anti-gay its A-OK, right?  These are same type of  people who had no problem bringing Africans as slaves over in the boats, but have issues when people seeking a better life want to cross the Rio Grande.  Only foreigner’s who agree with Tea Party bigotry are allowed, I suppose?  Awodele is the one who set up the website to take people’s donations and owns the Christian Couples Fellowship.

To those who have never seen the First Amendment, this is what it looks like: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” As you can see it says Congress shall make NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion, which means, quit shoving your anti-LGBT religious beliefs down my throat. Thanks.  I will never understand why a group of people who are supposed to help people will spend their time and money to destroy the lives of people who do not even concern them in the first place. Speaking of religion:

Harvey Milk said it best, ““The fact is that more people have been slaughtered in the name of religion than for any other single reason. That, that my friends, that is true perversion!”  Now they are using it to strip away people’s rights!!

OMAHA, NE – As the LGBT Community becomes more and more accepted by mainstream society, it becomes easier to look at some of the problems within the LGBT Community’s framework.  According to the 2010 American Community Survey, LGBT families are more racially and ethnically diverse than families headed by married heterosexual couples;
41 % of same-sex couples with children identify as people of color compared to 34% of married different-sex
couples with children. Here’s a link from LGBTmap.org with more information.

I have heard many LGBT people scoff at this point, but the fact is LGBT People of Color experience higher levels of discrimination, both in mainstream society and within their own LGBT Community. According to a study by the NGL Task Force, reported by SDGLN, “A key finding of the original report was that, even given the high levels of discrimination against all transgender people in the U.S., transgender people of color including American Indians and Alaskan Natives consistently reported even greater discrimination and experienced worse outcomes than the sample overall”.  Not one thing even mentions dating.   LGBT People of Color are also subject to more instance s of violence as well.

When it comes to murder victims, 70% of murder victims who are LGBT are also people of color. The report documents from  The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs  reports 27 anti-LGBT murders in 2010, which is the second highest annual total recorded since 1996. A whopping 70 percent of these 27 victims were people of color; 44 percent of them were transgender women. As you can see violence against LGBT people of color is an overwhelming percentage of LGBT victims of violence.   Hopefully with more awareness and inclusiveness within our own community we can help improve the situation.

Marriage Equality Gets Possible Jolt With Stem Cell Discovery.

OMAHA, NE – The same Radical Fundamentalist Christian Right that judges against Queers and their struggles for marriage equality could have one less argument in the coming years. A stem cell discovery coming from the Kyoto University Institute will allow gay men to create their own eggs that can than be used for surrogate birth. The discovery would allow the use of embryonic stem cells to create eggs with one of the men’s DNA that can then be fertilized by the other partners sperm and implanted in a surrogate. One small step for Gay Man, One Giant Leap for All Same-Sex Marriages.  No more need for a female to donate egg cells. This new discovery makes the Radical Right’s argument that same-sex marriage is unnatural pointless.  Straight couples unable to conceive naturally have used “test tube” technology and other ways to have their own kids. Now with this technology gay male couples can have children of their own, with the DNA from both partners involved as well. This technology would also allow women with unusable egg cells for whatever reason to conceive a child with their own DNA.

This isn’t the only great news for same sex couples recently. The SCOTUS is to take up the issue of the Federal DOMA. The fact that the defenders of DOMA speak in such terms of bigotry and hate only helps the case to rule it unconstitutional. According to the New York Times, LGBT issues just might get their Brown vs Board of Education with the case on DOMA. In Washington State, former priests speak out in favor of marriage equality. In Washington, 63 former Roman Catholic priests will publicly support Referendum 74. Several states, including Maine and Maryland, have marriage equality on the ballot this year and prospects look good for those who support Marriage Equality.

Here’s a YouTube personality I recently discovered on a friend’s FaceBook page, I think you’ll like him, too!

National Coming Out Day, More Than Just For Gays.

OMAHA, NE – As many of you already know, National Coming Out Day is a day that is observed internationally and celebrated by people who identify as LGBTQ.  The term coming out is when you publicly acknowledge your sexual orientation or gender identity as a member of the LGBT Community. NCOD was founded in 1988.

While the term is very much connected to sexual orientation and gender identity, I hope people recognize that it encompasses a broader spectrum of people coming into their own as individuals, like people telling their religious circle of friends and family that they have atheist views. While the author of the atheist article disagrees, I think the idea of “coming out of the closet” is one of the LGBT Community’s little contributions to mainstream society.  Like St Patrick’s Day and the partying associated with it was once just an Irish thing, St Patrick’s has become a day people of all ethnicities and races now celebrate. Of course this would give new meaning to bigots coming out of the closet. 😀

Speaking of coming out, in the United States, a lengthy and growing list of celebrities have come out of the closet, helping to shape society’s views of people who admit their sexuality. Celebrities coming out also helps demonstrate to those afraid to come out that its okay to be gay, they are proud of who they are, and that even people with money and power have to deal with their own sexual identity.
