OMAHA, NE – On Monday, December 10th, 2012 there is a Nebraska Legislative Judiciary Committee Hearing in the Omaha City Council Chambers at 9:00am. The hearing is about expanding Nebraska’s Civil Rights laws to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. I hope any and all able bodied Omahans who are reading this can make it. The resolution is LR-478.
The bigots from the Nebraska Heritage Coalition already have had talking points posted on the website long before I even heard about the hearing itself. Their website is urging members to testify and talk about how it would strip them of their religious rights. Also they stress to their people to tell how sexual orientation and gender identity are not civil rights.
We can counter that by providing information and talking points of our own. First all of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgendered people all unfairly encounter discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Point out that sexual orientation and gender identity are biological realities and that homophobic beliefs are 100% choice. Homophobes have to teach their kids this crap into continue its legacy. Its not born, it is taught. People who oppose protections from discrimination are the very people who choose to discriminate! If you have a personal story dealing with discrimination by all means, please share it at the hearing!!!
