OMAHA, NE – Nebraskans for Equality is hosting a Full Equality Rally at the intersection of 72nd and Dodge, this Friday, August 2nd, 2013, from 4pm-6pm CST.  The rally will raise awareness to the public of the vast range of inequality issues that members of  Nebraska’s LGBTQIA community face and the actions that need to be taken to resolve them. These issues include, but are not limited to, statewide Workplace Protections, Marriage Equality, Public Accommodation, the passage of legislative bills LB380 and LB385 and much more. Anyone who supports moving forward on LGBTQIA issues is more than welcome to attend.

While momentum for Marriage Equality after the SCOTUS’ DOMA decision is strong and growing nationally, the Nebraska LGBTQIA community must be part of the national movement forward on all LGBTQIA issues. Members of the LGBTQIA community of Nebraska must continue to be loud and proud.  Members of  Nebraska’s LGBTQIA community must engage the public to help increase awareness and knowledge of the inequalities that negatively impact  thousands of  Nebraskans. Nebraskans for Equality founder, Ken Riter, intends to help raise awareness statewide concerning the social welfare of the LGBTQIA community, the challenges they faced by LGBTQIA people, and solutions to those issues in the State of Nebraska.

The acronym LGBTQIA demonstrates the diversity of the community and stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, Questioning,Intersexed, Asexual and Ally. To further demonstrate diversity in the LGBTQIA community, members can be of any race, ethnicity, nationality, religious denomination, cultural background, economic status, or educational background to name just a few. What sets the LGBTQIA community apart is the discrimination its members deal with based on actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.  Nebraskans must understand that these issues are not chosen, they are part of the person just as much as race or hair color is. These are the issues all Nebraskans should be aware of, these are issues that must be dealt with and resolved as soon as possible.

OMAHA, NE – Recent events at Omaha’s City Hall seem to indicate that the Queen Mayor is completely clueless on the parameters of the Fire Contract she helped negotiate. If Queen Jean truly wanted a fire budget that cost taxpayers less, why didn’t she fight to cut actual costs in the contract to begin with? Her contract she touted adds additional costs that were already removed by a previous CIR decision.  Sound like a complete lack planning on her part, or she wanted to load so much extras on the contract at the cost to taxpayers just so she could turn around later and blame the Union for these costs.  Maybe its a tragic mix of both?  The Fire Chief tells Stothert in emails that her rhetoric is unfair and inaccurate.  Stothert even remarked publicly that “its not a circus”.   Maybe it feels like a circus because you are now the ringmaster, Mayor?  Let’s not forget, even the Mayor’s proposal on the Fire Budget is still higher than planned, which seems to be an admission that her contract is costing Omaha taxpayers.

I also fail to see how breaking aspects of the contract equates to the fiscal responsibility she’s been preaching about since her gated community behind first sat on the City Council in 2009. As Mayor, she should already know she can’t unilaterally change terms or conditions of the contract.  I fail to see how allowing this fight with the Fire Union over the contract to go to the courts saves taxpayers money.  I hope much of Omaha voters are beginning to see the mistake they made in supporting someone who is clearly a pillar mismanagement.  Speaking of mismanagement, the Queen Mayor’s budget proposal keeps the restaurant tax intact, something she promised to repeal, but to add salt in the wounds of her supporters, she is going through with a random audit to be sure the City isn’t losing out on revenue. Here’s the link to the Proposed Budget, if you haven’t seen it yet.

OMAHA, NE – Nebraskans For Equality Stands with Harvey Fierstein and thanks him for being outspoken against the atrocities being done against Russia’s LGBTQIA community.  Watch his Lawrence O’Donnell interview here. Harvey strongly speaks out against the hateful laws and the resulting state sanctioned violence against Russia’s LGBTQIA community.

Harvey Fierstein
It’s time to start paying attention to what’s going on in Russia in case you haven’t yet. Putin has declared war on the gay community. He’s made it illegal to promote homosexuality in theater, film, tv, print that in any way could be seen by youth. In other words anything gay is now pornography. He’s outlawed the adopting of Russian children to any country that has legalized marriage equality. And now it is reported that his next law will remove the children of GLBT families from their homes. This will apply to biological children as well as formerly…

OMAHA, NE – Senator Elizabeth Warren seeks to reinstate Glass-Steagall which would prevent banks that make risky investments from taking deposits insured by FDIC. Glass-Steagall is a depression era law which separated checking and savings accounts from risky investment banking. Warren agreed that the bill would not have prevented the Great Recession, but it would still require banks to downsize, thus reducing the risk of future bailouts. Here are Five Facts about the new Glass-Steagall.

Elizabeth Warren appeared (below) on the Squawk Box on CNBC and reminded the skeptic hosts that she was able to get the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in place despite all the opposition.  She believes that at least by trying, at least this new bill will have more of a chance than if we did nothing at all.

Elizabeth Warren on FOX News, where she remarks, among other things, that Glass-Steagall was only a shadow of its former self by the time President Bill Clinton repealed it. The Law was important because it prevented the investing risk takers from using the regular persons money for their risky endeavors. She stresses that her bill doesn’t stop investors from going through with their risky investments, it just keeps them from using FDIC backed taxpayer dollars.  Senator Warren also expresses excitement about getting bipartisan interest in the bill.

Queer Alphabet Soup

OMAHA, NE – The LGBT community is growing as more and more people begin using LGBTQIA.  Many people get confused by the additional letters because they don’t know why they are included. Well, this article will attempt to remedy that.

L is for Lesbians, who are persons who self-identify as females who are sexually and romantically attracted to other females.

G is for Gay Men, who are persons who self-identify as males who are sexually and romantically attracted to other males.

B is for Bisexuals who are persons who can be sexually and romantically attracted to both men and women.

T is for TransGender who are persons whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth. TransGender persons may not self-identify as transgender.  Transgender people may or may not use a different name or pronoun than the one they were assigned at birth, and they may or may not pursue hormone therapy or surgery.  The term GenderQueer fits under this category, and refers to people who do not identify as, or who do not express themselves as completely one gender. Genderqueer people may or may not identify as transgender or transsexual.  When in doubt, always defer to the way a person self-identifies. Transgender people may also identify their sexual orientation as straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or even pansexual.

Q is for Queer which is an umbrella term which embraces a variety of sexual preferences, orientations, and habits of those who do not adhere to the heterosexual and cisgender majority. The term queer includes, but is not exclusive to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender persons, and intersex persons, traditionally, this term is derogatory and hurtful, however, many people who do not adhere to sexual and/or gender norms use it to self-identify in a positive way.  The term Queer was taken back by gay activists during the nineties. Pansexuals would also fit under this term.  Pansexuals can be sexually and romantically attracted to people of any sexual orientation or any gender, they can be attracted to the broad spectrum of people in existence.

Q is also for Questioning, for those who are still finding the identity that fits them.

I is for Intersexed and is used for those whose anatomy is not exclusively male or female.

A is for Asexuals, who are persons who do not have sexual attraction. Asexuals may or may not consider it to be a sexual orientation.

Rainbow LGBTQIA

A is also used for Ally, someone who is not LGBTQIA, but supports full equality for those who are.
