Occupy Omaha Adopts NonDiscrimination Clause

Occupy Omaha adopted a nondiscrimination clause at its regularly scheduled General Assembly Wednesday night, Dec. 14, 2011.  It was added to the agenda early in the meeting and was voted on just after 10pm, after about 15-20 minutes of discussion.  With the act of adopting the nondiscrimination clause, Occupy Omaha put itself light years ahead of the Omaha City Council when its comes to civil rights. The clause itself contains 15 protected classes.  Way to go, Occupy Omaha!!!

Here is the nondiscrimination clause adopted by Occupy Omaha in its entirety:  We will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, and/or bullying against a person based on their actual or perceived race, religion, familial status, physical attributes, physical and mental ability or disability, sex, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, gender expression, gender identity, and political affiliation or beliefs.

During the discussion it was decided to also dictate were the clause would go as part of the proposal.  It will appear on the Occupy Omaha website, newsletters, media and anything else dealing with any Occupy Omaha event sanctioned by its General Assembly.

The nondiscrimination clause was proposed to the General Assembly by local activist and Occupy Omaha member Ken Riter and was previously written by Mika Covington of Forward Equality and OccupyEquality Nebraska.

Help launch an LGBTQ equal rights email campaign!!

CFEP, Citizens for Equal Protection,  is launching an email campaign in support of Ben Gray’s Non-Discrimination ordinance.  Below I will have sample letter info for those council members who voted for Ben Gray’s civil rights ordinance and also a sample letter for those on the Omaha City Council who chose to be ignorant bigots.

The middle part of the letter in quotes and in BOLD  is very important because this is where you tell your personal story, and why this is important to you.  There are samples in this paragraph for what to say,  but please replace the entire paragraph with YOUR words.

You can find out who your City Council member is by calling 402-444-5520.

Please email your City Council Member and remember to send a copy to: CFEPJEFF@me.com   You can do that by putting the CFEPJEFF@me.com in the CC: or BCC: spaces provided.

Here are the email addresses for each City Council member:

And the email samples, First to the supporters: And please remember to use your own words, especially for the part in quotes and in BOLD.

Dear Pete Festersen, Ben Gray, Chris Jerram

Thank you very much for your vote to pass the work ordinance additions that were proposed last October , your support for the LGBT community is very much appreciated.  I look forward to your continued support as Ben Gray re-introduces this in February of 2012, adding sexual orientation and gender identity to address discrimination is a positive step forward for Omaha.

Currently, there are over 130 cities that have passed these protections including Kansas City, Dallas, Milwaukee and Salt lake City, just to name a few.  Omaha residents believe in fairness and equality, it is a big part of who we are.

“This is very important to me as a gay man, a lesbian, a brother-sister-parent-son-child-friend- because I was discriminated against for being a gay man.  Here is where you make it personal and tell why this is an important issue for you. If it is not about you, express why it is important for relatives, family, friends, or the community at large.”

I look forward to your confirmation that you will continue to support this effort to make Omaha a more welcoming place to work, live in and visit.  Omaha is truly a world class city and this is one more step into the reality.

Sincerely,

Your Name

And the email samples for those opposed: And please remember to use your own words, especially for the part in quotes and in BOLD.

Dear Jean Stothert, Gary Gernandt, Franklin Thompson, Thomas Mulligan

I am writing you today to support the job protection ordinance that will add sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes in the city of Omaha. This is being re-introduced in February 2012 and although you previously voted against these added protections, I would urge you to reconsider and do the right thing for Omaha.

I look forward to your response as to your support for this ordinance change.

Sincerely,

Your Name

Ben Gray to Reintroduce Non-Discrimination Proposal in January.

Tuesday evening, November 29th, Omaha City Council member Ben Gray announced that he would be reintroducing non-discrimination legislation in the Omaha City Council in January.  January 24th, 31st, and February 7th will be important dates to remember for the legislation as well as for the Omaha area Queer community.  Please consider taking time off for those dates to attend the City Council meetings at 2pm.  Further details about the legislation will be released at a later date.

Ben Gray also mentioned that as a result of the legislation, certain North Omaha religious organizations are gathering a dark storm against the legislation and also against him in the next election cycle.  Ben Gray stressed he didn’t take an oath to protect the Bible, he took an oath to protect the US Constitution, and that he has an obligation under the 14th amendment to support legislation that protects all citizens under the due process of the law.  All to thunderous applause.

Its amazing how a simple piece of legislation that is meant to citizens is a no brainer to all but those with no brains!!!

The event at House of Loom was hosted by CFEP and PFLAG and many local elected officials, past , present and even future were there. Among them; Mike and Anne Boyle, Ben Gray, and Gwen Howard.   Council Bluffs City Council-elect, Nate Watson and Unicam candidate for District 9, Sara Howard were also there in attendance.

Additional information including letters to send officials and their emails will be posted at this blog later this week.

Occupy Omaha and LGBTQ November Update

There has been some exciting news for Occupy Omaha and LGBTQ issues since my long last posting.  Among them, the Omaha Occupiers who were arrested earlier this month got all their charges dropped, and Forward Equality, an Omaha based LGBTQ right group voted to not support Gwen Howard for Congress at this time.

In Occupy Omaha news, the 3 Occupiers arrested for trespassing had all their charges dropped.  Also, I’d like to announce that the Occupy Omaha General Assembly Wednesday, November 30th, 2011 will be at the Holy Family Catholic Church at 1715 Izard St, about a block north of 17th and Cuming.

In Omaha Queer Community news, local LGBTQ group Forward Equality voted to not support Gwen Howard for Congress at this time a brief of the minutes is below.

Forward Equality Board of Directors discussed Gwen Howard for Congress and this is an exert from the Nov 22nd Board Meeting minutes:
Gwen Howard for Congress:
• Supports SSIA (Safe Schools Improvement Act)
• Supports ENDA (Employment Nondiscrimination Act)
• Lacks knowledge on transgender/genderqueer issues
• Does not support RFMA (Respect for Marriage Act) at this time.
• Does not support join-adoption nation-wide at this time.
• Lacks knowledge on immigration rights for LGBTQ individuals and couples.
• Supports the Occupy Wall Street movement. (Did not know what Citizens United was)
o Public proposes that we do not support Gwen Howard for Congress at this time.
Proposal seconded
• Motion passes

Members of Forward Equality would like to stress that this may change before the election as more information is given to the Gwen Howard Campaign and that members of the Omaha Queer community understand exactly what all the candidates for NE district 2 stand for when it comes to equal rights protections for the LGBTQ community.
