New Session of the Nebraska Unicameral Begins.

OMAHA, NE – New members of the Nebraska Unicameral were sworn in today, marking the beginning of the new session on the Nebraska Legislature, the 103rd Legislature to be exact.  If you haven’t paid attention to Legislative news in Nebraska before, the beginning of a new session is always a good time to start! Laws passed in the Unicameral affect you just as much as laws passed by Congress or your local City Council.  Here is a link to a PDF with pictures of all the state senators and their contact information.

One of the first things the new session does is elect the Unicam’s Speaker and Committee Chairs. The non-partisan Unicameral is composed of 30 Republicans, 17 Democrats and 2 Independents, with 11 newly elected members. Despite a Republican majority, many of the Committee Chairs went to Democrats.

Expect some fireworks this year during the legislative session.  Ernie Chambers, the longest serving State Senator in Nebraska history is coming back to a legislature with even less experienced State Senators than when he left it.  Also, expect a broad spectrum of issues to be tackled this session, from voter ID, to states taxes, political campaigns and  college tuition. In December 2012, Jeremy Nordquist (LD7)  held a Judiciary committee meeting in Omaha about the need for legislation to study LGBT issues in Nebraska.  Nordquist, a Democrat, indicated he would like to cover LGBT issues during his second term in the Unicameral.

Among other issues to be covered this session, State Senator Brad Ashford is proposing a separate juvenile justice agency. Ashford, who represents an Omaha LD, told the OWH  “the state’s current system of handling troubled youths is broken and failing to stem street violence.”  Governor Dave Heineman wants to freeze tuition in the state, as well as lower or eliminate some state taxes.  State Senators Steve Lathrop and Bill Avery have plans for legislation that will cover issues concerning political campaign financing.  Lathrop, specifically, wants to introduce a bill that would require non-profits to report money spent on political ads, an article worth the read.

Sounds like our State Senators have their work cut out for them.  Expect some fireworks this session, the legislature is expected to act more independent of what the Governor wants and with Ernie Chambers back in Lincoln, well, get your popcorn ready for a show.  😀

Congress has messed up priorities!

OMAHA, NE – The 112th Congress, the worse in history finally comes to an end.  Could the 113th Congress get any worse?  Don’t hold your  breath.  The 112th Congress has a reputation for being a do nothing Congress, but I think you already knew that.   They only passed 220 bills, many of them very minor or ceremonial bills.  Now, with the 113th Congress convening,  the Democrats gained seats to now having a total of 200, the GOP has 233, considerably more than the 218 needed for a majority. Don’t bet anything is going to get done.  Congress the 113th!

The 113th Congress is already starting out shady, with 67 Republicans, dubbed The Sandy 67, voting against the first round of Federal money to pay for flood insurance claims for Hurricane Sandy. Many of these GOP members are from states in the Deep South, states hit hard by hurricanes in the past, they came to DC demanding money for the disasters in their states.  Now they want to deny the disaster dollars for another region that needs them for the same reasons the GOP disaster states received theirs. Here is a list of the 67 Republicans who voted NO.

Republicans and Democrats are already gearing up for a fight over the debt ceiling.  So exciting, right? Debt Ceiling Rerun, Part Deux.  The TeaBaggers will demand we shut down the government and not pay for what we owe.  What many people who spew TeaBaggery do not understand is that under the law, the debt ceiling limits the U.S. Treasury’s authority to borrow money to pay for decisions already enacted by Congress and the president.  The government needs Congress’s approval to raise the debt ceiling to raise money to pay its bills. If you think the 112th Congress did nothing, (because they did nothing) just wait until the 113th Congress dances around the debt ceiling in a few months.

Chuck Hagel Deserves No Support from the LGBT Community!

OMAHA, NE – It has come to my attention that some people believe Chuck Hagel deserves support from the LGBT community.  I say, no way, and I have a plethora of  reasons why.  Most of those reasons are quite obvious, he has been an outspoken opponent to LGBT rights, and he has yet to recant the great supermajority of his anti-LGBT stances from his time as a US Senator from the red, bigoted state of Nebraska. There is a such a long list of information in various recent news articles detailing Hagel’s anti-LGBT stances.  I would seriously question anyone’s LGBT support who urged the LGBT community support anyone with an anti-LGBT record as Chuck Hagel.  Let’s not forget, Hagel scored a zero on the Human Rights Campaign’s Senate scorecard between 2001 and 2006, voting against pro-gay initiatives and for anti-gay ones. He also opposed gays serving in the military. How convenient that he claims to support gays in the military now, that DADT is over.

Outgoing and openly gay Congressman, Barney Frank (D-MA) opposes Chuck Hagel as a candidate for Secretary of Defense because of his openly bigoted views and opposition to James Hormel, Bill Clinton pick for Ambassador to Luxemborg.  Here is excerpt from a letter from  Barney Frank’s office as shown in the Huffington Post.

Then-Senator Hagel’s aggressively bigoted opposition to President Clinton’s naming the first openly gay Ambassador in U.S. history was not, as Sen. Hagel now claims, an aberration. He voted consistently against fairness for LGBT people and there does not seem to be any evidence prior to his effort to become Secretary of Defense of any apology or retraction of his attack on James Hormel. And to those of us who admire and respect Mr. Hormel, Sen. Hagel’s description of him as aggressive can only mean that the Senator strongly objected to Hormel’s reasoned, civil advocacy for LGBT people.

I cannot think of any other minority group in the U.S. today where such a negative statement and action made in 1998 would not be an obstacle to a major Presidential appointment.

Even James Hormel, the target of Hagel’s anti-LGBT remarks, questions any sincerity in Hagel’s recent apology. According to that Huffington Post article, Hormel pledged to oppose Hagel’s confirmation as Defense Secretary unless he affirms his support for Equal Rights for LGBT military families. Hormel also questioned the timing of Hagel’s apology and has yet to see an apology sent to him personally.

Chuck Hagel will have to deal with LGBT groups who oppose him as well. Chad Griffin from the Human Rights Campaign pointed out in a statement that Hagel’s consistent anti-LGBT record in the Senate raises serious questions about his stances today.  I agree, and if Hagel has become such a supporter where are his statements?  Where are records of his accomplishments on LGBT issues?  In 1999, Hagel once said of repealing DADT, “the US Armed Forces aren’t some social experiment.”  Not the kind of thing I want to hear from someone who would be in charge of further implementing the DADT repeal. And to my fellow Nebraska Queers, Chuck Hagel supported the dreaded state constitutional amendment that banned all same sex civil unions, domestic partnerships and marriages, the bigoted proposition 416.

Despite the apology, Chuck Hagel’s LGBT problem only grows worse and is well deserved.  Would we tolerate a Senator who accused someone of being “aggressively female” and that being female would hinder someone in a government job?  Hell no we wouldn’t!!!  A similar situation is addressed in this article.  The next Secretary of Defense should care about the LGBT members of the military and should be able to help further implement the DADT repeal. Many Republicans also oppose Hagel for Defense Secretary as well.  But above all else, does Chuck Hagel even have the skills and experience for the job?  According to the Washington Post, he doesn’t.

And why do I bring this up on my blog?  A couple of straight allies who run the FaceBook group United for Equal Rights in Nebraska are claiming Chuck Hagel deserves the support of the LGBT community. Obviously I think otherwise, and there is plenty of information out there to support my case. I can’t even understand why Hagel is still in the mix?  Because he backed Bob Kerrey for US Senate?  Gawd, I hope not!!!

2012 in Review, Progressive Oasis.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 10,000 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 17 years to get that many views.

OMAHA, NE – On Monday, December 10th, 2012 there is a Nebraska Legislative Judiciary Committee Hearing  in the Omaha City Council Chambers at 9:00am. The hearing  is about expanding Nebraska’s Civil Rights laws to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. I hope any and all able bodied Omahans who are reading this can make it.  The resolution is LR-478.

The bigots from the Nebraska Heritage Coalition already have had talking points posted on the website long before I even heard about the hearing itself. Their website is urging members to testify and talk about how it would strip them of their religious rights.  Also they stress to their people to tell how sexual orientation and gender identity are not civil rights.

We can counter that by providing information and talking points of our own. First all of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgendered people all unfairly encounter discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.  Point out that sexual orientation and gender identity are biological realities and that homophobic beliefs are 100% choice. Homophobes have to teach their kids this crap into continue its legacy.  Its not born, it is taught.  People who oppose protections from discrimination are the very people who choose to discriminate!  If you have a personal story dealing with discrimination by all means, please share it at the hearing!!!

Homosexuality Reality Homophobia Choice.

Homosexuality is the Biological Reality. Homophobia is a Lifestyle Choice.
